Problem: When driving the boat at above idle speeds the entire motor or drive system "kicks" almost as if hitting a log under the water. It will do it probably 3 times a minute. It is progressively getting worse.
Took it to a local guy who told me that he hasn't check into it yet but it has the original shift cable and the original dogs. States that there was a recall in 86 that was never done and that its probably the issue. He stated that the cable was 200 and the dogs were 450 and the cost to put it in would be upwards of 1200.
I dont know what DOGS are im assuming they are some type of gears. I asked if i could just do the shift cable he said yes but he isnt sure if that would fix the problem or not.
The boat: 1986 sport craft 4cylinder 140hp chevy motor Cobra OMC drive. boat is in good shape other than that.
My question: is this something i can fix myself or are there special tools/knowledge involved in replacing these gears/dogs if i decide to.
Is there a location where i can purchase replacement gears/dogs at a lower cost.
If i just run it what will eventually happen
Could just replacing the shift cable fix my issues
is there a way i can tell if the dogs/gears are bad without getting into a major project?
THanks
