Aerator not pumping water

I've got an 88 bayliner bass with two livewells. The aerator pump(mounted through transom) that was in it when I bought the boat must have frozen so I installed a new one, exactly same model atwood that was in it before. The pump powers up and whines for a few seconds, then makes a different lower pitched whine, but no water comes into either live well. I unhooked the forward live well and just ran hose to the rear livewell, still nothing. So I tried running in reverse with the pump on and water came in the drain but not out of the aerator. I also ran a garden hose into the pump and was able to confirm that the hose and aerator were not plugged. At a loss.

Is the pump mounted above the waterline?<br />If it is, you will have to lower it. so that water can get to the pump. Also make sure the water intake hose deos not have a loop in it that goes up above the waterline.<br /> The pump will not suck the water thru the hose to the pump.

The pump is mounted below the water line. The livewell aerator piece is above the water line though. I cut the hose short and made as straight a line as possible to the aerator in the livewell with no change. The aerator on livewell is probably 20" above the pump and 8" above the water line.

the pump mounts directly on the thru-hull fitting, right? If not, it should be below the level of the fitting, it needs gravity to prime it, but it should easily pump through a 20" rise in the output. Sounds like you must have got a defective pump.<br /><br />welcome to iboats.

Yes, the pump and thru hull fitting are one piece. The outlet on the pump is at the top of the pump. I'll try another pump. I appreciate your help. P.S. This is a great forum.

Got the right polarity on the pump wires?

I'm not sure if I have the polarity correct or not. I hooked black to black but this particular boat has been wired and rewired (not by me) and there is some evidence of fire damage behind the drivers seat. I'll check that out if we get on the lake tonight.

Most bilgepumps I've seen used Brown for the Power Wire,+ Black to Ground.....
