so i acquired this boat from my wifes grandfather after he blew the motor. my original thread is here. 1985 mercury 115hp elpt
http://forums.iboats.com/boat-topics-questions-not-engine-topics/my-introduction-i-guess-623069.html

the powerhead was seized to the driveshaft, and i didnt feel like messing with it in the cold, nor did i have an air compressor to use an airhammer on it to try to separate the 2, so it sat all winter, 2 weeks ago i got myself a nice air compressor and today i brought my air hammer home from work and after a few quick hits the motor popped right off.

started to pull it apart and discovered cyl 4 piston is shot. looks melted, the block has got to be pretty scored as well, so at this point im not disassembling it anymore and just writing it off as scrap

you guys agree with it being a waste of time to go any further??

my original guess on why it blew was he didnt put oil in the gas, it blew about 2 minutes after we switched from the 1st tank to the 2nd tank.

Man, you give up easy.

we originally thought he was giving us the boat, as did the rest of the family, including his wife. but he is insisting on picking it up no matter what

the cyl wall is gonna be messed up, which is going to be more money then im willing to let her grandfather waste on repairs, as the boat is completely rotten, the transome has been reinforced, the floor is soft everywhere and has holes in it all over, the whole thing flexes entirely to much when its in the water, and it appears there is cracks in the hull, its beyond the point i will even step foot on it once its in the water, and her grandfather informed me that he was hoping the motor would be useable so he could lay plywood over the rotted boat floor and keep using it. at this point, im saving an 81 year old man from drowning

Sounds like my boat when I winched it out of the muck it had been sitting in for 9 years half full of water and mud.

hes had it 20 years, it spent 15 of those on a mooring in salt water, and the past 5 years being used 1 day a year when the family comes to visit, the other 364 it sits uncovered in his yard.
i originally had good intentions, but im not willing to spend a **** load of my time that could be better spent renovating my house or working on my own cars, so that it can go sit all year and be used 1 time. im also not ok with the condition of the boat and ive tried to discuss it with him, but he refuses to accept that the rot is an issue and i dont want that falling back on me in the end. its just easier and safer to call it a loss and move on. ive already got plans to buy a small boat for crabbing in 2 weeks and in another year im gonna grab a newer bowrider similar to his so we can take it up for family functions and keep the vibe alive

also your boat is beautiful, this boat is just not worth the time

I have a long standing policy of not telling anyone their wife/girlfriend is ugly even though the thought might present itself :).

i sent him pics of the damage and i was asked if there was any way we could just bypass that cylinder......

????---Bypassing a cylinder is a new idea to me , not sure how one would go about that !---------This is typical damage on an inline 6 and likely due to overheat.-------When was the lastt time that the water pump impeller was replaced ?-------When a motor is only used once in a while it still needs to be looked at and maintained.

It is unusual for #4 cylinder to be the first one to get damaged. It is probably worthwhile to pop off the transfer covers and inspect all the cylinders.

im not sure when the impeller was last replaced, but i know it was working fine at least a few minutes before it blew.

we were out for ~2hours or so and everything was working fine, but the gas tank kept losing pressure, so we switched tanks to his other tank and about 1-2 minutes later it blew. im wondering if instead of putting oil in both tanks, he actually put twice the oil in 1 tank and none in the other

i dont think any other cylinder has damage, before i got my hands on it he took it to whoever maintains it for him at the boat yard and the guy ran a compression test, all other 5 cylinders were 130 psi and cyl 4 was 30 psi. but his mechanic told him it couldnt be fixed, and it would be a minimum of $1k just to rip it apart to see how bad it is, which is how i ended up with it

visually just looking through the exhaust side all other 5 cylinders look perfect with no marks at all. cyl 4 piston skirt is really scored though, which means the cylinder wall has got to be just as bad

At this time it can be fixed.--------Not worth doing at marina labour rates.---You would have to do the work yourself.--------If you keep running it like that it could come to a " dynamic halt " and then it would be worth 20 cents / lb at the scrap yard.

It is still unusual for cylinder #4 to be damaged first. Normally cylinder 1 goes first, followed by cylinder #3. Maybe cylinder #4 ingested something?

You might check it out. Remember, if you plan to fix the motor, you need to fix whatever problem caused the damage as well, or it will just get damaged again.
