There are lots of possibilities. If I had your symptoms, I would use a systematic approach to narrow it down

To test ignition, I would check to see if ignition voltage is dropping/missing during engine bog/stall. This can be done in a variety of ways. I prefer to check secondary voltage in the spark plug wires with a SmarTach meter. You can also use a timing light or dva meter to test for ignition failure during engine bog/stall. I find the SmarTach meter is more convenient and more conclusive in eliminating failed ignition as the problem. The following website can help in groubleshooting the ignition.

If it is not an ignition problem, I would clean the carbs to make sure none of the passages that are part of the idle circuit are plugged up.

This is what I would do. Others on the forum may have additional or better suggestions for you.

Good luck

Check your stator. Same thing happened to me on my '84, 50 hp merc this past summer.
