After "re-wiring" minn kota all terrain 55 prop is spinning "backwards"

Long story short, but I had an old Minn Kota 55 AT 12V sitting in the floor of my shed for 2 years. Decided to see what was wrong with it and drop it off for some service. Well that is another story as the I got into a dispute with the shop performing the work (no estimate given when promised it would be prior to work starting, called and told to come pay almost 90$ for repaired motor ).

ANyway, when I asked them what was wrong they said some "wiring was broken" inside. OK, whatever. I take off new trolling motor and place this guy on the boat and take it on a shakedown run. Point the motor straight (looking at the actual head in the water not the indicator up top), hit the foot control and go backwards. HAHA, sure enough I spin the head around and hit the button and go forward.

I'm not taking the motor back to this shop and just want to get this working correct so I can try to sell it on craigslist or something.

Is it possible the wiring is backwards to cause this or do they have a gear flipped?

Thanks.

That is probably a permanent magnet motor. If the field winding is connected in reverse polarity it will run backward.

All you need to do is reverse the wires going to the motor.

I had the same problem after taking the lower unit apart. It ended up being the magnet shell was upside down; must have moved it as I was twisting the lower unit off. I just twisted the magnet shell 180 degrees and the motor was turning the correct way.
Below are a few other possibile problems that could be causing your problem.

Motor running backwards:
Step 1. Polarity reversed to armature. Possible causes include:
A. Wired backwards
B. Brush plate in upside down
C. Magnet shell upside down (on 3 ?? or 3 5/8? motor assemblies the marking notch should be on the
bottom towards the skeg)
