hello everybody
After changing the intake manifold gasket i have the following problem.I feel that the half or some of the cylinders do not work.During the switching on the engine i feel some dead points. The motor is GM 305 year 1978.I suspect that something went wrong during the installation of the distributor. Is there only one or two possible ways to put the end of the shaft in its position?

it can go in 2 different ways, the right way or 180 degrees out.

It can go a 1000 different ways
What you have to do is locate #1 TDC on the compression stroke.
To do that, do this.
Pull the spark plugs out to make it easier to turn over. Turn the engine by hand while holding your finger in #1 spark plug hole. Turn the engine till you feel compression building. Continue turning till you get the timing mark on the vibration dampner lined up with the 0? mark on the timing tab.
You are now on #1TDC. Now put your distributor in so the rotor is lined up with #1 spark plug wire. You may have to take a long screw driver and turn the oil pump to get the distributor all the way down.
NOW, you have the distributor in the correct vicinity. You still will need to set the timing.

I jsut take my compression guage and use the rubber piece that threads in the spark plug hole. Then I crank the motor till you hear the pppssshhhh of air from the #1 cyl. that puts you at TDC. then you can stab the distributor. make sure the rotor is pointing to #1.

Thanks for replying, when you say "I still need to set the timing" you mean that this may has changed after pulling out the distributor? Is it a difficult task? Is the service manual nessesary to do it?

Setting the timing is easy, all you need is a timing light. Once you assured that the distributor is in the right place, I would also check to make sure that you have the firing order correct and the right wire is going to the right plug. Also check for vacuum leaks.

Good luck

Rob.

Connect the timing light to the #1 plug.....
Start engine....
Point the timing light at the timing tab where you found TDC.....
Turn the dist. until the mark is 8* before top dead center.....
Then check the dwelll on the points to vefify....
If any adjustment to the points is needed, the timing will need to be re checked......:)
