I am going to look over my wiring schematics tomorrow to check my fuel pump connection, fuel pump relays, oil pressure switch, etc. In the likely event that I may need to buy a new fuel pump I have been doing some research and found that the "Mercruiser" brand pump I would need is no longer sold separate from the cool fuel, but there are aftermarkets available that say they replace this exact pump.

Part no. 861156A1 - This is the Mercruiser Brand, the pump/cool fuel combo that merc sells it cost $300+, though I have found a couple sites that do sell this part but for around $200

Alternative pumps include:
- Mallory Brand, part no. 9-35433 - Sells on here for $185.99 and I have seen them in the $150's

- Airtex Brand, part no. 110-E11004 - Sells around $120

Does anyone have any experience with these aftermarket parts to steer me in the right direction? Is it worth saving $50-$80 or should I stick with Mercruiser brand? Thank you

Re: Aftermarket Fuel Pump for Mercruiser 7.4L MPI. Are they worth the money savings?

Howdy,

A few years ago I needed a new mechanical fuel pump for my 1997 carbureted 454 Mercruiser.

I searched around and found that the Mercruiser replacement was pretty expensive so I looked for aftermarket alternatives.

After looking at several catalogs I eventually called AIRTEX directly. Although they do not sell retail, the Airtex rep told me that they are the OEM for many names in fuel pumps (including Mercruiser......you didn't think Mercury manufactures their pumps did you?)

So if you buy an Airtex marine fuel pump out of the Airtex catalog at your favorite Autozone, you're most likely getting the same one that you would get from Mercury Parts Express etc.....

The "Cool fuel" part of it may not be made by Airtex however.

I saw that pump on Summit also. They appear to indicate that it is in fact a "Marine" pump. If true, I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

Regards,

Rick

Thank you very much, I checked the fuel pump relay down to the connection at the fuel pump and all electric is good plus the fuel pump didn't kick on until it was smacked around so definitely getting a pump. Thank you for the help on this topic
