Has anyone mounted an aftermarket oil cooler on a pre-3.7lx 470? Just wondering. I've seen many offered in a variety of auto aftermarket catalogs (JEGS, etc.). I have 1986 170hp 470's that do not have oil coolers.

See here for an example of the plethora of parts that are available:

The problem is that you would need a water cooled oil cooler, and unless you did something like add a remote oil filter I am not sure how you would hook it up. If you have power steering there is a power steering fluid cooler in the hose going from the exchanger to the exhaust elbow, so I guess something like that might work. You do not want anything that will restrict the raw water or coolant flow through the exchanger. If your exchanger and impeller are in good shape you should not need an oil cooler.

you shouldnt need an oil cooler because you cant generate enough power with 3.7 liters to need one.

Ayuh,.... Find a used one off a Merc 454 motor,.... though I donno why you'd want to,...

Oil that's to cold ain't any better than oil that's to hot,.....

Too cold, 'n it turns to sludge from condensation,....

I had mercruiser one on a 470, and one without, didn't notice any difference but I have switched to a 4.3.
I still have it sitting in shad.
