Air cooled???

Greetings,<br /> Our 1993 Yamaha 9.9 outboard isn't peeing. We ran it to see if there was a thermostat that would open up and let the stream go, but although no water was exiting, she wouldn't heat up either, and that after powering up the channel and back. Like a couple of clowns we were watching the wrong hole....the one aiming downward on the aftmost side, in the metal casing, about mid height on the engine. A mixture of mostly air and a spritz of water were steadily trying to get out. The actual water (peeing) exit only had a few drops coming out intermittently, but it was warmer than at the other hole. Is this a classic case of water pump failure? And what is that other downward aiming hole for? The manual doesn't even mention it although it is marked on the diagrams.

Take a thin wire and try and wiggle it around in the small pee-hole while running the engine (in water), bugs normally blocks this hole, the other hole you are talking about in the middle of the motor you don't need to worry about ... if the wire doesn't work it is time for an impellar change .....

That proper pee hole has a coresponding rubber tube just inside the engines lift-off top. I have removed it and cleared it out. It is simply a pull off connection. Doesn't taking a look at this, negate the use of a wire, or do you mean for the wire to be long enough to go beyond this tube?

yes, the thin wire must be long enough to go deep inside to loosen whatever is stuck in there, no need to pull of the tube from the connection, but you can do it that way aswell, start your engine with muffs on and then see if the water comes out strong, if it doesn't it is time for an impellar change ...
