Attention all sterndrive owners... I can personally attest that air does not freeze. I winterized my 1987 3.0 GM 140.. by following the advice of Bondo to simply drain the engine and manifold and not worry about using antifreeze.. I did just that in October of 2013. Could not get it started the other day, took it to marine shop, they changed the points and it runs like a champ!! :joyous:. Gonna have them install a water/fuel separator too.. (I will change it over to electonic ignition later in the year) If there was ever a winter to test out winterization techniques this was it.. around here 15 days in Jan below zero... as Bondo said, cast iron gets along nicely in sub zero weather... Thank you Bondo!. drain it and put it to bed... yes ladies and gentlemen, it works perfectly... happy boating!

This planet would be in a world of trouble if air froze :D (yes I know it can at ridiculously low temps)

It was a brutal winter this year. Many weeks of sub -40.
I truly hope I was diligent in draining the block like the OP was!

I leave mine dry every winter . Never had an issue. But I was kinda paranoid after this particular winter ... Was afraid residual water may have turned into ice bergs lol. Nope fired right up

LIke the OP I used the air doesn't freeze method this winter. A really cold winter for this part of NC. Zero problem when I fired it up 2 weeks ago.

I can attest that air doesn't freeze at high altitude either...I was suspicious at first! I've de-, and re-winterized about 4 times already!

Bondo, your last statement rings a bell with me. Some folks will change spark plugs, points, and thermostats like they become poisonous after no time at all. I have a Kohler 15 HP lawn mower engine that is nearly 15 years old or older now and I still run the exact same spark plug in it. Same with a lawn edger too. It is about 30 years old with the same spark plug. And thermostats either work or they don't. I can easily test them with some water and a little heat. While that seems like a lot of effort for the little cost of replacement, I'd do the exact same with a new one anyways myself. If it opens around the proper temp and closes again when cooling off...it is good. No need for replacing it. I also view points the exact same way. They are easy to clean up and check for proper operation. It is not rocket surgery...
