air filter for 92 stingray?

the air filter on my 5.7 merc is only layers of different size metal screen. Is this normal for an inboard? I know that there is not alot of dust on the water generally but? Any info appreciate.

They dont use filters. not much dust out there. The metal is a flame arrestor

It is a safety device. Just blow it out and keep boating. It is required.

Agreed, but a flame arrestor can also be cleaned with carb or parts cleaner -off the boat- of it's oily.
