What would the symptom be if I had a hose, specifically the 1/8 inch hose that inserts in the top of the carb, that was severed?

Would the motor run, but when given throttle would it bog?

1989 Evinrude 40

I would think that if the motor ran at all, it would only be running on cylinders not supplied by that carb. Therefore having it bog would be a definite possibility.

I assume the severed hose is the fuel supply line from the fuel pump. I would also expect that you would have fuel sprayed all over your motor from the severed line. Quite a fire hazzard!

Not familiar with your particular engine though. Maybe that severed line is for something else. Hopefully someone with more knowledge of your particular engine will come along.

Good luck!

Thats the hose for the primer. If its broken or open, fuel will squirt out when you push in on the key. Not good. Plus that cylinder will suck air as its running. The piston wont like that.

Re: Air leak at carb????

Just came across your other post on this and discovered it isn't a fuel line that is severed.

No idea what the line is, but if it is letting air into the fuel system it will definitely result in the motor bogging.

In future, if you are looking for additional responses to your post, just bump it to the top of the list by replying to your own post and using the ^ symbol. Much better than starting a new post everytime. Everyone that responds can benefit from the info in the previous posts.

Cheers.

Just to be clear, the small hose at the top of the carb, the one just below the 1/2 inch hose is the primer hose? It almost crosses and touches another hose, not sure what that one is but it goes from the bottom carb to the top. I know which one the fuel line is.

Re: Air leak at carb????

Ask the Mods to combine these two posts or lock one. You can get real confused by all the different directions.

Theres 3 size hoses. The largest one coming from the pump is the main feed to one carb. The next smaller hose will be on one side of the carbs and go between the two. That transfers fuel from the first carb to the second.

The third, and much smaller, hose is for the primer to the top of each carb. If that hose is off or open, gas will squirt out when you activate the primer. The motor will suck air thru that opening with no hose on it. That can cause bogging and lead to piston damage.

Dhadley- Thank you! This is what I wanted to read--

"The third, and much smaller, hose is for the primer to the top of each carb. Obsessing?? No obsessing allowed! This is supposed to be a fun sport!

Well, it is Spring -- and time for boating so a little obsessing might be allowed. But only if you are indeed at work.
