any way of knowing if there are air pockets when changing the outdrive fluid?? Mine in perticular is an 88 OMC cobra...If im that concerne about it, shold I live the fill hole open overnight, and let the air pocket bleed out????

For those of you familiar with the set up, I filled it from the middle hole until it started spilling out, and then topped off from the top hole....I followed what the manual says, but I just have been reading a lot ofhorror stories of messed up out drives.....

You filled it correctly. I always check mine the next day just in case anyway.

If you will use a pump like this one, you can fill from the side until you see oil through the top dipstick hole. Then top off as needed. You will spill very little.

Obviously, use the middle hole like you did. I usually do two things.. 1) I buy the Hi-Vis in the gallon jug, but put it in a leftover quart that I kept.. that way I know exactly how much I put it. 2) After I get the two quarts in, I seal it up, run the engine, put it it reverse and forward for about a minute, then I turn off the engine, and loosen the top fill cap enough to let air out, if there is any, and let it sit over night, then check it. If it looks good, I seal it up. Since I've been doing it this way, I rarely ever get any air locks.
