Last night while my grandsons were visiting, the oldest (12) asked me where the rubber from tires goes. I scratched my head and said the particlules are so small that they must go air born when they leave the tire.

This got me thinking. Since I service commercial HVAC units, I have noticed that the condenser coils are usually clogged with black gunk. Could this be tire residue? The stores next to busy highways always seem the worse. I have always passed this stuff off as a biproduct of jet exhaust.

So maybe all this black stuff on our cars, houses, and anything left outside is residue from tire wear.

Could this stuff actually be a cause of so many respratory problems? Just something to thing about......SS

SS, your probably right, I can only imagine what those coils look like here in Ca. Not to mention brakes and clutches

HI! the black stuff is from diesel exhaust - tires - and asphalt. :)

Good Theory, let me tell you how close you are to being right. Pretty close. Anyone here tow a car with a motohome? If not, Next time you see someone towing one ask them about what goes on the front of the car as they tow it. And about the rubber build up on the car and its exhaust system. Thats why alot of them are now covered with protective covers as they are towed. Ever watch a nascar race and hear about the rubber build up on the track And the grey area above the groove? Same principle only on an alot faster on those tires than on street tires.

Matt

Anyone that does a lot of city freeway driving, like I do, can see the rubber residue in vehicle air filters.

Some of my vehicles have never seen a dirt road, yet the air filters are plugged within 30K miles.

Same goes for the passenger compartmentin air filter(s).

I've been told that there tiny microorganisms that actually eat the stuff. After all, it is organic.

c/6
Hooty

Hooty, if that was the case, I shouldn't have to clean those large coils. lol

Compounds they mix with the rubber to get the higher mileage out of the tires could be synthetic. Doubt if the microbes will eat that stuff. Who knows, maybe the added compounds prevent the microbes from destroying them.

I'm just curious if the stuff stays in the air all them time, How far it travels, and if it is hazardous. I've never seen any reports on this.

I know brake dust contains asbestos and that they are phasing out the old material.

SBN, Put me down for two of those HEPASUITS. The more I think about it, the more it makes me wonder........SS

I always hated following those big trucks, You can't see around them! Now I have another reason not to follow 18 tires rolling, He's clogging my filters and lungs with rubber.

Now that you have thought this up, I wonder how much money some Government agency is going to spend on finding satistics on this idea :D

Yes,

Tiny little 'GoodYear Dust Mites'...

Maybe due to some environmental catastrophe, they aren't as many in the area where the black-dusty buildup is.

Perhaps if you introduce a fresh colony of them, maybe it will keep the coils cleaner.

:D :D :D

H.
