air silencer

do i need a air silencer on a 84 johnson 6hp. the problem is when running seems half power. cover the little hole at the side of choke hole with your thumb about half way and moter speeds up nicely.any help! thanks

Possibly. I once tried to run a 6hp with an air duct to breathe smoke-free air. Never-mind that, bottom line is that after numerous duct design changes, there was no way that thing would run drawing air through a duct. It had to be something to do with the sound waves/acoustics.
