I have a 1974 70hp Johnson which i removed from one boat and installed on another, problem is the wires at the tach have been cut and I don't know what hooks to what, the tach is a early 70's airguide and has two wires coming out the back one is black and the other is yellow, the wires coming out of the control both look gray one is darker than the other (proably faded) anyone have any ideas which is which? The tach was on the boat the motor came off of.

Nobody has ever wired one of these airguide tachs, I read somewhere that Minkota has bought out airguide but can't find anything about marine tachs on thier site. Help

Re: Airguide Tach 70hp Johnson wiring proplem(HELP)

I looked at the wires from the control a little closer and seems they have a cloth insulation over them, slid it back and the darker wire had a gray wire inside it, the lighter wire had a yellow wire in it, checked with a voltmeter and the gray wire is hot all the time even with the key off, the yellow seems to be a ground, two other wires coming out look new and one is red and is hot all the time the other is black and is a ground. Is this the color code that is supposed to come out of 1974 70hp control (red, black, gray, and yellow)? and where does the yellow and black wire on the tach hook?
