ok i am in the middle of rebuilding motor for my boat. i do not know when the last time this thing was in the shop. i bought her last july knowing that she had a cracked block thought i could fix it and run it but it was a hole lot worse then i thought. new motor about done which brings me to my current question...

i have a alpha1 out drive (boat is a 1987 modle witha 181 in it)and since i dont know when the last time it was in the shop for anything and since i will be having a fresh rebuilt motor going into her i want to make sure that i am not going to have any issues out of the out drive. i figured that i would pull the drive off and take it into my local marina have them put a new impeller in it. what else should i have to do? shouldi cahange out the u joints as well since i am there? how pricie are they?since i will be right there anyways i will be checking the gimble. but as i had mentioned i am mainly wanting to know what elese other then the impeller should i have the shop loook @ wile they have this outdrive in there? thanks in advance for all the help from all of you

Why don't you replace the impeller yourself? If you can rebuild the engine you can sure do your own basic drive service.
Have you looked at the Merc information up in the Adults Only sticky?

as to the drive itself. agree w/ Don S. change the impeller yourself. it's not to hard. especially if ya got a oem service manual. if ya don't have one. get one. it's the most important tool in your tool box. all i've done over the 5 years i've had to my drive is change impellers and gear lub. pressure test the drive. if it holds. seals are good. no metal shavings in the gear lub and your good to go for the drive. if there's something else wrong with it. it will show up while your servicing the impeller. least the issues i've had have anyways.

as for the ujoints. if they aint rusty, grease them up.
also, grease the coupler. check the alignment, check the gimble brg. check all rubber items, bellows, water hose, shift cable. grease all the zerks ya got. use the proper grease on the various parts. ie. ujoints and gimble bearing get mercruiser ujoint and gimble brg. grease. coupler gets mercruiser spline grease. etc.

That's not a manual, that's a knee pad. Here, download the OEM manuals for free and do the job right.

Drive manual http://www.4shared.com/document/zz_5pj9o/Service_Manual_06.html

Bet you didn't even look at the Adults only sticky did you.
