1996 mercruiser 3.0 lx . I have three sending units -one from the gas tank -one from the oil sending sensor and one from the thermostat. While driving the boat during the spring i would hear a small alarm coming from what i thought to be the engine bay- The thermostat sending unit has another bolt next to it for what i believe to be the alarm -its not being used . the oil pressure sending unit
has only one wire to it dont see it connecting to an alarm. I am assuming the alarm is connected to the oil sender where is the switch for the alarm located? i pulled the engine and cant find it. where could it be ? any help would be awesome . could it be an all in one sensor switch?

Ayuh,... Hard to say just What you were hearing,...
Alarms are most generally mounted under the Dash...
I've Never seen 1 in the motorbox...

Is this possible? SENDER ASSY-DUAL [37293T]

does dual mean that the sender and the switch are in the assembly together?

If you look at section/page 4E-12 in service manual #13, it shows that there are two senders/switches (water & oil) going to one Audio Warning Buzzer (as options).

It also says specifically, do not mount the buzzer in the engine compartment because it is not "external-ignition proof", so I would guess it's up at the helm somewhere. The instrument wiring diagram shows the buzzer at the instrument end of the harness.

Also in manual#13 section/page 4D-5 thru 4D-11 there is an extensive diagnostic procedure for testing all of that.

Good luck.

That is for a boat with dual helms (stations)...the sender can signal more than one gauge.

This not part of the oil pressure warning system.

Here is a picture of what you would find if your boat had a low pressure warning alarm: two distinct sending units tee'd from a single point on the block;

Happy boating!

I also have a 1996 3.0L 4cyl. Alpha 1, Gen 2 mercruiser I/O and I get no alarm when turning the key. I'm fairly new to I/Os Does anyone know if the alarm system came standard on the 1996 model? I'm being told by my mechanic that I need a new outdrive $1400! gear oil was low and exposed the upper bearing and I want to make sure a warning system is in place after spending the money. Not sure what brand drive he wants to use. Any suggestions? This after spending $1000 on all new seals last year!
