Alarm Question

Hi all - just got a new (to me) boat - 2002 Stingray 220DS with a Volvo Penta 5.0 GXI motor. The past three times I've gone out have ended with an alarm going off on the way home, somewhere between 3-4K rpms. It's not a steady alarm - it has a pattern, and it remains on until I turn the boat off.
Pattern: double beep, pause, single beep. Repeat.
After the alarm, turning off the engine has trouble restarting. I need to put in neutral with some extra gas to get it going again.

No idea what to check with this... read a lot about over heating and sensors, but I've been struggling to find a good schematic, diagram of the engine and how to check things... some people have recommended trim fluid, disconnecting sensors etc, but this is hard without a good engine diagram. So - a couple questions for the experts out there...

1. Any good overview / diagram of the Penta line of engines - maybe even my model in particular?

2. Any ideas on what to check / fix as a result of this alarm? Does the pattern mean anything???

Thanks!!!

I've not seen any schematics float around so I can't help you there, but over heating and low fluid levels are the primary reasons for alarms.
For fluids, check your trim fluid reservoir, lower gear unit oil reservoir (if you have one), and engine oil level.
What is you engine temp? Should be around 170, +/- 10 degrees. Carefully touch the surface of each of your manifolds - do they feel equal in terms of temp or is one much hotter than the other? What are your gauges reading? Do a visual check of the wiring harness and look for loose grounds.

Who services your boat?
Have you considered calling your local stingray dealer and asking about the beep pattern?

You can access alot of information (boat manuals, wiring, diagrams) for your specific your boat via the Stingray website, you must sign up first with the serial no of your boat.

I may be wrong but I've never heard of an engine alarm going off in a pattern. Usually a steady horn. Patterns could be signaling reaching a GPS way point or depth alarm on a sounding machine. I know it doesn't solve the engine issues but it sounds like 2 separate things to me.

Sounds like a depth/GPS alarm to me, when you say it sounds on the way home, is it in more or less the same place?
