I just bought a used boat it has a 99 Johnson 200 on it. The previous owner had receipts from a reputable marina in our area showing where he had a new ignition (top of motor,CDI,Module,ECT.)and water pump installed. I heard the motor run before I bought it and it sounded fine. He did mention a new oil tank was just installed. Since there is no mention to this on the receipt from the marina i think he did this himself. I got it home and it sat for several days and then I went to start it . After running a few minutes the no oil light came on and it would not rev very far above idle. I inspected the tank and it does appear to be new and installed correctly. What could be the most likely causes and how should I go about trouble shooting it. Thanks Jeff.

Squeeze the oil tank bulb and see if it solves the problem. He may have not bled the air out of the line.

I would recommend removing the oli hose nearest the VRO/OMS pump and purge the line using the oil primer bulb until you detect a solid smoothe flow of oil. Might want to purge into some sort of container to prevent a mess.

Re: alarm sounding and no oil Light lite on tach

I removed the hose and pumped primer till steady flow out of hose. But it looked as if oil was already right there in hose when I disconnected it. So I put it back together and started the motor. It ran for about 2 mins without no oil light on but then light came on and also its not able to rev. I premixed the tank so no damage will be done during my trouble shooting steps. Also its a bear to get running and I have to pump the heck out of the gas primer. If the VRO was bad would it not pump on both sides oil and gas to the motor, or could it go bad and not pump oil but pump gas. Also if it was bad could I get gas to the engine by pumping the primer past the VRO and would it start and have enough vacuum from the carbs to keep it running at idle but not enough to rev?

Either side of the pump can fail ,but if the air motor portion of the pump that actuates both the oil and fuel plunger is faulty it would definately affect both the oil and fuel delivery. Also if the crankcase pulse hose that leads to the pump has come loose or is leaky it will cause the same symptom. And yes ,if the pump is bad you can get fuel to flow through it to the carbs by pumping the primer bulb.

Thanks ob But could you tell me what is taking place in the system that actually causes the no oil light and alarm to sound. I mean how does it tell there is no oil. Does it sense a drop in pressure or rise in vacuum due to lack of oil in the line?

The no oil is sensed by the electronics on the vro. That's why you have the wires running to it.

Here is an exerpt from a 2000 article from Wallaye boats Magazine :

"The VRO's electronic circuitry compares the rpm of the engine to the number of pressure pulses from the oil pump piston. As the oil flows into the fuel area, the pressure moves a small piston that actuates a steel pin in the alarm module. The pin's movement is detected electronically and "counted." If the engine revolutions exceed the preprogrammed oil pulse ratios, the warning horn is activated sounding a rapid on and off sequence."
