Overheat alarm. Check cooling system before engine is damaged. Were you in shallow water right before or when the alarm sounded? Might have sucked sand or muck into pump. When was the water pump impeller last changed.

Some of the Mercs had an issue with the magnet in the oil tank falling off the float triggering an alarm.

Weeds.... Most likely plugged the intake

"No idea when....." Means absolutely change the impeller NOW..... Many people change em every season.... They should at least be changed every few years.... BTW never run the engine without supplying water to the impeller for even a second... You can damage the impeller almost instantly.

Can't tell until you remove the pump. mercury had a plastic water pump with a stainless liner If the plastic has melted you will need to replace the whole pump, otherwise just replacing the impeller is sufficient.. Mercury ASLO use a stainless pump If your engine has this one then only the impeller need be changed.
