Alarm Sounding

When key is turned on (not running) it sounds a a loud continuous alarm.

After much searching I find it is related to the oil sensor located at the bottom rear port side where oil is routed to the remote filter from.

When I unplug the lead to this sensor it shuts down the alarm.

Does this indicated a bad sensor or is there something else controling this beyond the sensor?

Thanks in advance

That is your low oil pressure alarm...and will turn off as soon as the engine has over 4 psi of oil pressure. The 'switch' is normally closed (alarm) until it senses pressure and opens (alarm off). You want this to sound before every engine start to let you know that your alarm is operational...but if it sounds with the engine running, kill the ignition and look for the cause!

Happy boating!

P.S. The Mercruiser engine alarm system also monitors your engine temperature and (usually) the drive lube reservoir. Overheating and/or loss of drive lube will turn the alarm on if the engine is running.

Does the alarm go silent when the engine is running? If so it is working to let you know when the oil pressure is too low.

It`s safer to replace the faulty sensor than to be out of oil and replace the motor.
