Alarm warning

I have a 89 Johnson that has a complete overhaul which I have run two tanks of gas through at double mix. I filled the tank today with a 1 1/2 mix and after I ran it for a few minutes it sounded an alarm. The alarm was a short beep of about a second long with several minutes in between beeps. I only ran it for about 1/4 mile and it beeped two times so I shut it down. What whould this alarm be?

Re: Alarm warning

Do you still have the remote oil tank connected? The alarm might be the low oil warning sensor, but that alarm should sound once every 20-30 secs.

It could be the oil tank. Are you still using it or do you premix all your fuel? What did the overhaul consist off? Sound like a new/rebuilt powerhead.

Re: Alarm warning

The model is J175STLCEB ( 89 Johnson 175 ). I don't have a VRO oil tank so I premix. When I bought the boat the motor ran fine but I found out a month later that the rings were stuck and one was broke. After I found this out I had all the cylinders bored 20 over and had everything replaced new including all the bearings. Then I ran one tank through at double mix at 1/2 throttle, one tank through at double mix at 3/4 throttle and, started one tank through at 1 1/2 mix to complete the breakin period. I had just started the third tank when the alarm started. I had a wiring harness problem with the gauge lights so I wired them to come on with the ignition without a fuse. The ignition had two wires coming out. One went to the tach and the other one I wired to the instruments. Whould the wiring cause this problem? The alarm started after the wiring was redone.

If the VRO pump is still installed, disconnect its harness. You will still have the over temp alarm. Intermittent beeps is the low oil/no oil alarm.

Also make sure the oil line connection at the motor is plugged.

What color was the wire that you connected to the gauge lights?

Re: Alarm warning

The oil lines are plugged and the oil tank wires are disconnected. I will have to check the wire colors in a manual or online somewhere since the previous owner had already tryed ot rewire by splicing different colors. The ignition had two wires coming out under the key. I know one wire went to the tach, which was white in this case. The other wire was purple, where should it go?
