Looking at buying an Albemarle 247 express with the hard top. Mid 80's models all with recent rebuilt engines. All Chevrolet 350 with Volvo Penta Outdrive. Anything I should be aware of? Anything notorious I should look out for? This is my first power boat purchase, coming from 2 sailboats, 26 and 30 feet. Any feedback is appreciated from owners or otherwise....Thanks!

Re: Albemarle 247

while sometimes considered overpriced (like grady's and whalers), albemarle is a strong name in coastal and offshore boating. as long as the hull is in decent shape, i'd focus more on the engine.

Probably the finest trailerable boat on the market. You are simply not going to believe how well that hull rides and how economical it is to run, considering its size. They are among the best made boats on the market and the older ones are at least as good, if not better than the newer ones. I can not think of one continuing problem with those boats. There is a very good reason they hold their value so well, its because they are easily one of the best small boats ever made. What you need to be looking for is not a problem with the way the boat was built, you need to be looking for how it was kept up, because it had as good a start as possible, its just a matter of how it was kept up. If I were selling my boat today the Albemarle (probably one of the 28's) would be my target for my next boat and if I was looking for an exact replacement of my 23' walkaround (SportCraft) the Albemarle 247 would be the one I would look for.

Thom
