Hey,

This computer won't read the cd's or floppys. The device manager says a-o'tay, but when you put in the disc(cd or the floppy drive) , I get a box saying to insert disc. ????

I removed the CD drive and installed another spare and it does the same thing.

Please help me. I'd be all set if the puter was made of wood. ;)

Did you recently install this CD unit? Has it worked before? Do you have it installed on the correct IDE cable? Did you set the shunts correctly ie master or slave. Do the CD drive lites work? Are the IDE cable connectors installed completely and correctly? I think some units will accept the IDE connector upside down.

The CD unit worked before.
I set the shunt on the second one to match the one I removed. The lights work. I have no idea what an IDE cable is. If you mean the wide one, it only goes in one way as tyhere is a tab and groove.

Generally problems found after an installation are associated with the installation. So, with the computer OFF check that the power cables are securely connected to all drives. Also check that all wide cables are securely plugged into the floppy, hard drive, CD-ROM, and motherboard. One
may have worked loose when you removed, installed, removed, the CD drive. Also click on START, CONTROL PANEL, ADD HARDWARE, and let Windows search for any installed but not recognized hardware. Let us know what you find, good luck.

Go into system setup prior to boot to be sure bios sees it.

As Boatbuoy mentions, check the boot screens on power up, look for the devices (hard drives and cdroms on the IDE channels) and look for a floppy drive listed as well. You could go into your bios settings as well and make sure both the Primary and Secondary IDE controllers are toggled on. Make sure your floppy controller is enabled too.
If your floppy drive LED is on all of the time, the flat data cable is backwards, flip it over.
