Is it getting fouled at the seawater strainer or right at the thru hull?

Ours does that too. I haven't found a way to prevent it. Wish I could as I seem to clean it almost every weekend this time of year. the Admiral came up with a cleaner that is a 50/50 mix of blue Dawn dish detergent (it has to be the blue stuff) and vinegar. Heats it in the microwave and sprays the strainer and housing. Let it sit 10 minutes and then reassemble. Cleans it up nicely. Just a pain to have to do it all the time.

The only thing that stops that is use the boat. The flow over the intake keeps it clear. A friend has the same problem but uses the boat infrequently.

Oh we use the boat, but it's out to the anchorage, then pack up on Sunday and back to the marina. About 2 - 3 hours each way, depending how quickly we can get through the lock. Then it sits all week until the next weekend and there it is. Reduced water flow through the AC so a cleaning we go....again. Our marina has zero moving water so I'm not surprised. Our problem isn't at the thru hull, it's at the strainer. I think the Op has the same problem.
