Alignment tool # C-91-32555, how long and where to buy?

Any one out there know the length of the engine alignment tool that goes in teh slots on the back of the engine and on the inside of the transom? It is part # C-91-32555 (pic below)according to the original engine installation manual that I have. Tool does not seem to be available any longer. Nedd to check this ASAP. This is on a 1967 120

Ayuh,... Whatcha workin' on,..?? That don't look like a Mercruiser...

It's a 1967 MerCruiser 120. That pic is from the original engine installation guide. One family boat.

I would like to know how it works, and what it does. From just a few words I found on it, I think that rod was how they tried to align the early drives, then they came up with the alignment bar used today.

It looks like it's just used to set the fore/aft position. I can't see how it can offer any real alignment.
