all motor no prop

i have a 1995 bayliner capri 1950 3.0 mercuiser motor. i lost power on the lake. the prop does not turn with the motor. it does turn freely in neutral. when i put the boat in gear the prop locks up. both in forward and reverse. i removed the prop and the shaft does not looked stripped. what is the next step to finding my problem? help me i miss the water

Check drive oil and level,low/no oil destroys the upper gears.
shift into full fwd, put the prop on. have someone watch the shaft inside the boat at the rear of the motor while you stand on a plade and turn the prop.
Prop moves, shaft doesn`t= upper gears or lower drive shaft
prop moves, shaft moves- bad coupler

Odds are your prop hub is spun. Might not be able to make it spin freely by hand. Put a mark across the shaft and hub. Fire it up and drop it in gear and give it a shot of gas. Lines dont match up ,spun hub . Or drop your spare on it and see what happens.
