Hey guys I finaly got this 2000 175 Johnson torn down for a crankshaft seal and find myself with more questions about it then just the seal . Well it had a leak in the lower crankshaft seal and looks like someone that rebuilt it never put the seal in right and hack one side of it . I wanted to know if you can remove the crankshaft without removing the pistons all the way since I have good compression I did not want to take them out . I wanted to Just undue the connecting rods and slide the pistons toward the cyl head but the manual said dont let the rods come in contact with the pistons sides . Would I be better just taking the pistons out ? I also notice that one side of my intake is black and the other is clean what would do this ? you can see in the picture that a few of the rods are black too . I also found a melted stator , looks like the power coils have started to loose there insulation out the front It will need to be replaced for sure. Thanks for the input on this one ! http://www.shareaproject.com/pages/projectThumbs,p,455,00.html

Yep, the crank will come right out. Just don't mix up the rod caps - you probably already knew that.

Thanks again Dhadley, Did you check out the picture link ?Do you have any idea why the one side intake is so black and so are a few of the rods ?

The black looks like its wet & black. Or is it dry (sooty)? What spark plugs are you running? Was it running right, especially at idle?

Re: all this for a crankshaft seal !

Thanks for the reply ! After getting into more I put a scrached # in top the rod caps it's looks wet and black and hard like paint and the bottom crank 1/2 is cover in the same stuff but not the top block part just rod caps on top . It idle good and I am using ql78yc plugs never over heated since I owned the motor and it did 47 mph on a 20' boat and always starts on the second turn of the key . I was wondering about the cyl crankseal bores they have rough spots on a few of them but only in the bottom 1/2 of crankcase cover, take a look at the bottom 1/2 of the crankcase cover seal bores picture . What do you think ? should I polish out the rough spots in the crankcase seal bores or will they leak ? I check all the crank seal rings and are to spec like new. and the main bearings dont show any discolor or scraches . The lower bearing seems to have a little play in it up and down and side to side , I was going to replace it to be safe . The pistons sides are very clean also and do look like there new . I dont know if this black was there before they rebuilt it and they just put pistons in it and left it like this . This is a strange one for sure
