Or maybe not??
Snowmobile, chainsaw etc. demand their special oil. At least that's what the company says.
So I run all my two-strokes on Shell Racing two-stroke oil.
Why?
Well, it smells good and if my racing go-cart did survive the punishment, all other two-stroke must survive too.
Even the outboard......

Your go cart uses an air cooled engine, right? Air cooled engines run alot hotter than water cooled engines, therefore the oils have different properties. I know you sure can't beat the small of an oil when it comes to checking its TC-w rating

Sure, you can use the air-cooled two-stroke oil in your outboard. You'll have to clean the gunk out of it a lot more often, though, and it might just not be running after a while.

Or, you could use the oil that is designed for two-stroke outboards and avoid all of that.

Well, you can certainly debate whether there's any meaningful difference between the oils within a certain rating/category.

But to me there's no question that there's a difference between oils for 2 stroke air cooled engines and those designed and certified for 2 stroke water cooled engines. As Jimmbo said, there's a huge temp difference. Also, there's a huge difference in how they're operated. The air cooled engines I run (hand implements) are short bursts (less than a minute), mostly full bore, otherwise idle, no "mid range cruising". My outboard is extended idling, extended mid-range cruising, occasional full bore for several minutes at a time. Not a lot of up and down like a chain saw - or even a dirt bike. I'm no expert but I've gotta believe the oil is designed significantly different for those two applications.

I can't imagine why anyone would not at least use the correct oil rating - air cooled vs. water cooled. I can understand why there's debate between cheap generic oils and expensive name brands though.

The cart engine was a water-cooled 125 cc 30 hp unit.
But outboards mostly run with high load at fixed revs for long period and that is hard life for a two-stroke. Going up and down the rev range makes life easier.

The difference between a watercooled cart and water cooled outboard MAY need to be considered. Most ob motors and raw water cooled inboards have tstats to keep them at 140F or less. It prevents mineral buildup in the water passages. Carts are probably near temps of 200ish for cleaner fuel burns and hp. Their closed systems don't worry about minerals.

No need to add much here, you are getting sound advice. There certainly "IS" a difference. Outboard oils are ashless which keeps deposits down, air cooled oils will not burn off at the low temps of an outboard.

Corn oil? what is that? Does it mean "corn" = cornfield or is it "corn" = sentimental rubbish. Now I had to consult the dictionary as English is not my mother language.

It remains me about the vegetable Castrol Racing oil we used in the fifties. It smells like heaven!

Anyway, the classification on the bottle should straighten the question marks in this oily matter. If it apply to the makers demand it has to be OK whatever brand it is or in what shop it has been sold

D said: Not a lot of up and down like a chain saw

I suppose where you boat and when makes a difference here. I boat in salt, and often in big rollers, sometimes breaking.

So I've made a handrest that fits on the side of my throttle control, in order that even when I'm being thrown about I can still increase/decrease engine revs to suit the waves.

Doesn't seem to harm the outboard any. TC-W3 spec oil.

Agreed - that Castrol R was aromatic heaven!
