allmost a boatsman

i have a 1976 erude 55 horse with a jet leg.model #55672e.
i have sorted out all my troubles with it thanks largely to support on line.
my trouble now is when i was at the boat launch i started it up in water on trailer.
warmed it up it had very little water coming out the back, but had a trickle.
when i opened the throttle up to test new fuel pump it ran great, but the water stream was not happenig at all.
i ran it till i figured it was getting hot @wot.
still no water coming out so i shut it down.
the flywheel was not hot a little warm, but the side of the motor was fairly hot and the leg was pretty warm.
the guy at the boat place says the cooling water comes out of the exhaust (wich i cant verify as its a jet) I dont want to burn up my motor, as i have spent 3000.00 to get it this far.
so my ? is how hard is it to drop the jet leg, and is there anything i should watch for with regards to the shaft, gaskets and such.

ok chicken louie, a manual is important to have but you can easily drop the leg. If you can figure out how to remove the impeller you will find 4 boltsspread out inside the jet unit and one at the rear of the motor on the outside, from top down. Don't forget to unhook the shift cable first...should drop down, weighs less than 50#, alot less. The waterpump is on top of the jet unit..just a thought :)

Re: allmost a boatsman

thanks chief, i do have a manual but it covers 48 to 235 horse 1973 to 1990.
so it covers a lot in little detail.
i dropped the shoe and changed the impellar but i cant get water to come out the tell tale or the exhaust, the reason i say exhaust is cause the erude guy in town said the water exits there,i find that hard to believe.
it seams to be blocked.
i put the garden hose on the copper tube that the water pump fits on,and shot water up the tube
it takes water then pressures up,nothing out the tell tale or exhaust.
i assume it wont circulate as it is not running.
im so close to going boating, but dont want to wreck motor.
i will bolt everything back up and check at boat launch after work tommorow.
i apprecate all the help

If you have spent $3000.00 already, pop for a Factory Manual that is specific to your motor. None better and well worth the money.. You may want to get the parts Manual, also. Gives you parts numbers and blow-ups of the parts in question.. All for $60.00...

Manual

If your motor has thermostat, then engine needs to be warmed up before water will circulate properly. If you don't have thermostat, then maybe you have a blockage somewhere in the cooling system.
