Almost Awesome

After much struggling with my new (to me) '93 Merc 40 (OD259417) I finally got it running pretty good but I'm still struggling a bit with my low speed idling and hard starts. Once it's up and running it goes like a champ but I can rarely pull it into Neutral without it dying which makes for some difficult docking.

I need to link and sync which I have never done before and could only find the link on this site for '88 and older motors. Any help on this front would be appreciated. Also, I'm using NGK BUHW-2 surface gap plugs which seem really wrong to me coming from a V8 kind of world. Are these the best plug choice for this application?

Thanks in advance,

Pat

Re: Almost Awesome

Use a good NEW battery... that was my issue with low rpm idling.. (after a few hundred in other parts)

Thanks so much Gerry, this is a huge help and has allowed me to understand the mechanical workings of this motor a lot more. Unfortunately I don't have a remote starter on my motor so I needed a second person to perform most of my tests with the timing light and they couldn't stay around all day. I got to the point where I was happy with my adjustments using a base static timing of 2* btdc then performed all of the other adjustments listed from there. When I fired it up on the muffs my in neutral with no throttle my timing was more like 9* btdc. I really need to figure out how to wire a remote starter so I can do these tests by myself.

Re: Almost Awesome

So here's a new issue. Just out of curiosity I set the pointer to 0 on the flywheel and checked where #1 piston was at. BDC you say? That seems very wrong to me so I made my own mark on the flywheel and checked it with a dial indicator to indicate 0 @ TDC. I'm still not getting any fire in the hole but I'm hoping that I'm at least eliminating problems. I really can't see how this misalignment is possible with flywheel fitting into a keyway. Any thoughts?

My `89 40 hp flywheel you can unbolt the main flywheel ( magnets) from the center section by removing the 8 bolts , the part that holds the key . I wonder if someone unbolted it and didn`t align it correctly to correspond with timing pointer.

A lot of starting and idling problems is to lean on the mixture screws.

Interesting, I wasn't aware that you could separate the two. I'll remedy that immediately. I'm assuming that the guy that I bought it from screwed that up.
