Alpha 1 1.62 upper gear teeth

Hello. I have an old boat which had a 165 outdrive on it. I have retrofitted an Alpha1 Gen1. It's the 6-cyl ratio (1.62, I think) on which the upper gear set (behind the u-joints) has the same number of teeth on each gear. My old Merc 165 manual says I have to match the gear teeth upon reassembly according to some marks on the ends of the teeth. I pulled mine apart to replace the upper seals and the gears have no such marks. I have no idea which teeth were engaged. Does the Alpha1 not have this requirement? Are there marks somewhere and I'm not seeing them?

Thanks,
Jeremy

ya might go to the adults only sec. and get s/m #6. look at pp. 3A29. it still talks about lining up the hash marks, but the hash marks only appear on the 1.65:1 gear ratio. so if yers is 1.62, it might not have the hash marks. it also talks about heavy duty gear sets. guess ya treat them like gears w/o the hash mark.
best i read, and i read it quik. ya just put it together when no hash marks appear. read the s/m for your best info.

fwiw, them hash marks are pretty hard to see. mine did have them. they were very lightly marked and they almost looked like someone used an electric pensil to scribe them with...

Yeah, I remember seeing the marks on my old 165 drive gears. Mine might be a 1.65, but from what I can find the 1.62 and 1.65 change is in the lower. The 24/24 upper gears are the same either way.

I'll check out what you suggested. Thanks.

Thanks again for the tip. The online manuals are awesome! I have the factory manual for the 165 drive, but it's nice to have the current info on the Alpha.

The consensus is, Merc no longer feels it is necessary to match the teeth up the same on the 24/24 gear set. At some time in the run of Alpha Gen 1's they made this decision. The Alpha Gen 2 manual doesn't mention it at all. Mine is a Merc re-power Gen1, made in 2003. My local guy did say that some guys will make their own marks, so that after that they can always go together the same. I just may do that.
