Folks,

After my spring "sea-trial", I noticed a gear oil leak coming from the starboard side weep hole in the lower unit. On the advice of a forum member, I resealed the upper unit.....bolted it all together; filled her up and noticed no leakage. Hooked up the muffs and ran it to check impeller functionality (replaced pump since I had it apart anyway). A day later, when the driveway was dry, I noticed a small puddle under the outdrive.....GEAR OIL WAS LEAKING OUT OF THIS WEEP HOLE........

Any advice as to what seal could now be leaking would be greatly appreciated.

Pull the drive, drain the gear lube. Then pressurize the drive to about 15 PSI and spray some soapy water on everything. When it bubbles, you found your leak.

Sounds like it may be the shift shaft seal.

Re: Alpha 1 gear oil leak

I pulled the drives and pressure checked them with soapy water and found a VERY SLOW leak around the shift shaft bushing/seal and another very slow leak around the u-joint shaft seal (that I just replaced). I am going to reseal the upper and try to replace the shift shaft seal by only removing the shift shaft.

Any advice?
