Hello,

What is the metal wires that connect the bell housing the to gimbal ring, and then theres a wire from the gimbal ring to the transom. Is it a ground? if the that wire had been clipped with the boat start if not in the water?

Ayuh,.... Those are continuity/ bondin' wires that help fightin' corrosion,....

Nothin' to do with startin', or any of the electrical system,....

Okay, so any idea as to why the boat ran fine and started fine when the lower unit was off, but now it doesnt even start. it cranks just fine but doesnt start. And also, is the motor finicky about voltage, when cranking it says it has 8-10 volts. I accidentally left the charger off for 2 days. could that be my problem?

Thanks

Ayuh,... That sounds like a dead or dyin' battery,....

It shouldn't have to have a charger hooked up all the time, 'n ya, that big a voltage drop could no doubt be an issue,....

Other than an Alpha 1, What are We workin' on,..??

It is a newly rebuilt 1985 mercruiser 470. I went out today, and started it. It took a little bit but it started, and ran fine for about 10 min, then died off. I was getting like 13-14 volts on the dash, and I have check and noted that I have plenty of fuel in the tank. It ran just fine for about 30 min the other day before I put the out drive back on. Now Im having issues. I have check the coil as well, and its within range. The only thin I havent check is the distributor. I have one brand new battery and one middle age battery, both read 12.3 volts when I put my volt meter on them. Im puzzled....and its not really a charger rather a battery maintainer

Ayuh,.... The Points are inside the distributor, 'n are an annual service item,....

There's links up in Don'S Adults Only section at the top of this forum explainin' how to go about it,....

I cleaned the points, bought a new coil because I was getting low readings on the voltage meter (it was $20) and then I regapped the spark plugs, double checked the the carb, I have good fuel, and I have good compression.... both batteries are reading 12.3 volts. I am so lost.....

Start with a full ignition tune. That means NEW spark plugs, points, rotor and condenser. And if the cap looks even slightly suspicion, a new cap too. Same with the HT leads..... Clean the protective film off the points faces with a piece of newspaper, use a dwell meter to set the points gap, then a good timing light to set the initial timing... Check and make sure all the electrical connections are clean and tight...
