Alpha 1 Gen 2 Impeller Change question

I'm planning on changing out my impeller today. I've watched the videos and it appears to be pretty straight forward. The only question I have is do you put the boat in drive prior to removing the lower unit? The video says to have the lower end shifter in gear when you re-attach, but none of the videos or summaries show to have the boat in gear prior to pulling it apart.

Yep, full forward in gear so the shift shoe/shaft are pointing directly fore/aft.
