I have a 1983 23 ft. Searay Sundancer. The upper unit gears are destroyed. I am trying to identify what gear ratio was in it. It is powered by a mercruiser 228 hp v8 I think from the research I have done it has 1.47 to1 ratio but could be a 1.62 to 1. Need some help identifying what the ratio would be in this Alpha 1 gen 2 outdrive.

Not an Alpha One gen II, not even an Alpha One. It'll be an 'R' drive. But you can put an Alpha One one and not even see the difference. Most likely ratio will be 1.65:1. New drive will be 1.62... If you can post what the prop pitch, Max revs and Max speed were, we can run the numbers through a prop calculator and work out what the ratio was.

IT is defiantly an Alfa one outdrive I have owned this boat since it was new. the outdrive still has the Alpha one decal. I run a 15.25x 15 prop with a high Rpm of about 4200 and a top speed of 38- 40 mph. under good conditions. Normally I could rum at 3200 rpm and 30 mph give or take. I don't know much about the gear ratio's on these outdrives I have found a bunch of lower units on line but don't want to buy until I know for sure if an Alpha 1 gen 1 will work or I need a gen 2.

Then something doesn't add up. The boat is 1983 (you said in your first post), but the Alpha One wasn't released until 1986. And in 1986, the 4bbl version of the 305 was designated '230', not 228. It was called a 228 up to (and including) 1984, beyond that, it was always called a 230...

Post the serial numbers of the engine, drive and transom assembly. We can also get the drive ratio from the drive serial number.

Chris.......

I finally found the ID Tag on the outdrive it reads 1.50 ratio serial#00476330 I'm guessing I will need a 1.47 ratio to replace it now .I now know this is an Alpha 1 gen 1. from all the research I have done. I have replaced the engine 2 times thru the years so serial # will do no good. At this point I need to know my best options. Thanks for any infor you can give me.
