Re: Alpha 1 Gen 2 Stern Drive Removal

Is it really this easy- http://mercstuff.com/alpharemoval.htm

Or am I missing something?

It was that easy for me (1990 chaparral w/ 5.0L mercruiser and Alpha-1 drive), and I had never done it before. This forum and the service manual helped out a great deal. No mistakes and it runs great. Great pictures by the way. I did note that it shows 2-4-C lube on the engine coupler spline... I went ahead and bought/used quicksilver engine spline grease for that. I know Bond-O says any grease is better than no grease at all, but I have always wondered about the various greases called for in the manual. (2-4-C, coupler grease, special lube 101...). Maybe Bond-O, Don, or Chris can provide some guidance/history? Just a thought. I also noted that the photos/instructions linked were for an M, MR, Alpha-1, and not a gen 2? KTB

Yes. Just remember to put it into forward gear before you remove it. Sometimes the drive might be a little stuck and need some help coming off. A couple of large screwdrivers and a block of wood do wonders. Hy

Ayuh,.... 'n the Gen.IIs have the speedo tube to unhook....

As for the Greases,...
The spline grease has more body, 'n is stickier....
The 2-4-C is great stuff, but not so good for roller, or ball bearings...
It's better suited for bushing bearings, like the pivot pins...

Thanks guys. I plan to pop it off early next week after the rain passes. I'll snap a few pics.
