Alpha 1 gen 2 upper carrier

Hello all: Can anyone tell me how to remove the upper carrier? I am replacing the water pump impeller, plate,etc, and want to change the oil seals (#19 & 20)which are located under this carrier.

Page 6 is the exploded view and it is item #18

You can buy the part with the seals pressed in which is the way i would go

The compleat merc kit comes with it

But anyway if you look at the holes in the side of 18 you can use a screwdriver to carefully pry it up

put something under the screwdriver to protect the drive !!!!


I have found that grabing it with a pair of channel locks and turning it works well

Thanks for the quick reply Tom. I purchase a lower seal kit last year. Do you put anything on the portion of the oil seal that mates to the housing?

I just go buy the picture and use what ever A,B and C stand for in the manual

When your puttting it back toghter it really helps to use the pins to keep the pump houseing still when you turing the shaft to slide the houseing over the inpeller

I just used drill blanks that fit into the holes it is easy to dammage gasket 24 with the pump vanes so be carefull

Look at page 3B-74 (In your link above) for putting it back together. The first step answers your question of what to put on the seal..\

NOTE: Starting on page 3B75, it details how to put the pump together properly.

Was able to get to the local parts store before they closed last night but to my dismay, they had no perfect seal. Is there a compatible alternative to pefect seal?

Also, thanks Don for pointing me to the reassembly portion of the manual. I went through all my boating links and the manual and also printed everything out not wanting to bother anyone and I still was not thorough enough and missed the simple instruction provided in the chapter. I guess I should have continued reading.
