Hello. Long time reader but first time needing to post. I usually do all my own service work and am fairly experienced but recently had an oil leak into the bellows on my 1991 alpha 1 gen 2. Rather then buying the special tools required I opted to remove the drive and bring it to a local boat service shop. The original yoke was grooved so they sold me a good second-hand shaft assembly and installed it with new seals. I mounted the newly sealed drive on and when started it has a terrible whine.
I brought the whole boat to them today and they agreed that the noise is concerning. I am waiting to hear back from the owner of the yard on monday about what they will do for me.
I did some research and it seems the drive shaft assembly has a different part number from 1991-1997 and 1998 to current. Is it possible that the yard installed an assembly from a newer drive and this could be causing a backlash issue?
