So I have my annual service done to bring the boat out of winter retirement and apparently my outdrive blew a seal and filled up with saltwater on my last trip out and then proceeded to sit for 2 months during the cold spells. needless to say, lower unit is toast. ugh..
So now I need a replacement with a 1.62 ratio, problem is most of the ones I find are 1.5 ratios, does 12 hundreths of a revolution make THAT much difference? Seems almost trivial. If so could'nt I just re-prop at a slightly lower pitch to regain any loss?

are you replacing the entire drive or just the lower unit? If just the lower unit, you can replace it with any Alpha 1-Gen 2 lower unit.

When you winterized it...why didn't you drain the gear oil? From what I've been told and practiced, you change the oils/lubes in the fall to avoid things like this in the spring.

I live in Florida and here winterization consist of putting the boat in the garage for dec. and Jan.
I had the boat serviced in Nov. so all the fluids were relatively fresh and the seal blowing out was just one of those fluke things. Anytime my boat sits for a period of time I have all the fluids changed and everything checked out soooo...here I sit.

Just replace the drive with a New SEI outdrive, about $1500 with warranty.

You can get them from iboats, just click on Mercruiser Drive Assemblies just above and to the right of this thread.

I was seriously considering that but there seems to be some debate over the SEI corrosion resistance. Since I boat mainly in salt that creates a big concern.

I boat ONLY in salt water. Some of the finest, most corrosive salt water in the country I believe here in SW Florida. ;) The corrosion issue is mainly one of the paint coming off. A rattlecan of Rustoleum on a regular basis solves that problem nicely.

And for what it is worth - the OEM Alpha that i replaced had issues with paint as well.
