Upper needs resealing. Did he put new seals in when he installed the yoke? #20 is oil seal, #18 o-ring.

Thanks. Is there a kit I can buy to replace the oil seal and o-ring?

Re: Alpha 1 leaking oil in gimbal housing

Kpkrol, What a switch. Normally you find gear oil in the gimbal housing, want to put in new seals and have to replace the yoke since it has a groove, which would tear up the new seal (like it tore up the old seal).

The seal and O-ring should have been replaced when the yoke was installed. It is possible the upper gearcase nut (#16) was not tightened enough? Anyway the seal and oring are avail at any mercruiser dealer for nearly the same price as aftermarket. The yoke was a bit cheaper at the dealer, for some reason!

You should return to the mechanic to get the job done properly. The seal and o-ring should have been replaced and if replaced should not leak.

To do it yourself you'll need a special wrench and torque the retainer ring #16 to 200 ft-lb. Not an easy task if you don't have the tool. The tool at about $45 costs much more than the o-ring and seal.
