The drive goes together but reverse does not work? HAd shifter forward at the boat.

Lower unit.... as in the ENTIRE outdrive? or you separated the halves of the drive?
When you separate the drive halves you have to bolt them back together in forward gear also.... right up until they mate.

Forward:

Turn the splined shift shaft on the lower half CW while turn prop CCW until it locks...(thats Forward) and hold it there the entire time you are mating the halves, either by hand or with pressure by a bungee cord. If the prop gets bumped even a little, can jump out of gear.

The shaft on the upper half will be pointing straight ahead while in forward.

I just went through this myself. If the prop turns just a hair clockwise while your trying to mate both halfs together, it will throw it out of forward gear. Defently use the bungee like what Eric is saying. It will save you a bunch of time and aggrevation.
