First post. I think I came to the right place. I have a 1983 Alpha 1 which I am replacing the prop shaft seals on. I received the seals and how they are listed in the catalog (inner and outer) is the opposite of how the old ones are installed on my boat. My question is can someone confirm whether or not the seals on there now were installed incorrectly and how they should be in there. One of them - the #26-14077 is now on the outside with the spring side facing out. It is listed in the catalog as being the inner seal. The other - #26-12224 I assume is on the inside but is list as being the outer seal. Thanks!

26-14077 is also known as 26-76868 and is used in all the drives for prop shaft seal . GEN II drives have the second number listed as the outer seal .
R,MR,Alpha used 26-76868 back to back . inner has spring facing in , outer has it facing outward. The new seal is called a "cutter seal" made of SS and has a sharp edge to cut fishing line. It can only be used as the outer seal.

Noticed no one answered your question so I'll give it a try. According to manual No 6, The seal next to the needle bearings is installed with the lip facing the needle bearing. The second seal is installed with the lip facing away from the needle bearing and away from the first seal. The seal lips face away from each other.

Parts list identifies both inner and other prop shaft seals as 26-76868 for 1965 thru date. There is another seal which is your 26-12224 and is called a fish line cutter seal, it should be on the outside. My non-expert opinion would be to install your 26-14077 (new seal is 26-76868) with lip facing toward needle bearing. Look at the 26-12224 seal and look for the sharp pieces which would be able to cut fish line and put the facing outward toward the prop.

To verify PM achris and ask him.

Edit: looks like BtDoc has you covered
