Hello everyone- I've search extensively for a post on this topic to no avail. I have an '87
19' Four Winns Horizon bowrider with a 350 and Alpha 1 outdrive. I have a lot of play in the steering where the upper swivel shaft (square type) connects to the gimbal ring. It looks as if the gimbal ring is worn out- I am reluctant to tighten the two bolts that clamp it onto the swivel shaft past the specified torque for fear of breaking the gimbal ring completely. Has anyone seen this problem? I'm thinking I could insert some shims in there.

Thanks!

It's not unheard of.....
A new gimbal ring is the answer...

thanks Bondo, I know ultimately I will replace the gimbal ring. Do I really have to drill out
holes on either side of the gimbal housing as the
Clymer manual suggests? Or is there an easier way?

The Easier Way, is Much Harder.....
You'd have to Remove the gimbal housing,+ the transom assembley....
You Might be able to reach the nut from the inside.... After you Pull the Engine....

Check this thread, we discussed this about a month ago. It's critical that you determine the reason for the play, or you might be chasing the wrong problem. You're right about not over torqueing the bolts...but they should take alot, and if you're able to tighten all four the way I am without removing the out drive you're in great shape.

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=004769

Re: Alpha 1 Steering play

Thanks MrBill. I checked the link to the previous topic. The play is where the gimbal ring clamps onto the upper swivel shaft. It appears that the gimbal ring is worn. I think I might have a possible solution. I'm going to drill holes through each side of the gimbal ring, tap and insert screws (like setscrews)to allow me to make good contact with the swivel shaft. I don't have anything to lose because if it works-great! If it doesn't, I'll have to replace the gimbal ring anyway.

Re: Alpha 1 Steering play

I have ran into this problem a number of times...some of the ring to shaft joints were scary loose and were sucsessfully tightened...yes, you will exceed normal torque limits for the size fastener, but so what if you fail a bolt attempting a repair? you have already accepted the fact of replacement, or at least drilling more holes in a heavily loaded casting....
