Alpha 1 Top Driveshaft Bearing and race pitted..Does the wholething have to come ap

Hi I have some pitting in the top driveshaft bearing and race .. I suppose the drive shaft yoke has to come out... Or not ?. The gears look fine and the magnet and gear oil were squeky clean. Is this a DIY job or its it specialized tool intense ?? 86 Alpha 1 Gen 1 Thx!!

The upper needs to come apart. No way to replace that upper bearing without taking it apart.
You also need to check the double bearings on the input shaft, and the lower bearing on the vertical shaft.

Thx for the quick response Don Damn I was afraid of that sumbch... On the other bearings, do you mean do a visuel check ? Or something more involved ? Im gonna have to look at a diagram to see exactly which bearings you are refering too. I imagine its a tough DIY job ? I have no special merc tools ? Thx

Yes, just a visual. If they are smooth, everything is ok.
Without a couple of special tools, it's going to be impossible to do.

If you do it by the manual, you have to seperate the upper gearcase from the lower and disassemble the upper; pull out a seal and rotate the shaft with a torque wrench to set the preload on the upper bearing.

Look at the manual before you start the project.

Don Do you have an est on how many hrs I will be looking to be billed. If I R and R and just bring the drive to a shop , best and worst case senerio ? IF you can make a half axx guess ? I can price the parts myself...Thx again

2 to 4 hours.
If you take in the upper gear box, and they pull the input shaft, and reseal the drive (it's already apart and the reseal makes sure they check all bearings) and it's probably due anyway. If they only bearing bad is the upper, it will still need a new race, and reshimmed and rolling torque checked, and all the good stuff.
A lot depends on the shop too. A certified Merc dealer will be faster than one that does 1 a year and has to spend all his time in the manual looking things up.
