I removed my outdrive today and I have ujoints with inside keepers. According to the manual the retainer nut needs to come off in order to remove the shaft to press out the old ujoints. I bought the special too to remove the retainer nut. Any advice on what to do after I remove the retainer nut, looks like several spacers and gears will come with the shaft. Will they install in the same manner they came out no special alignment.

Re: Alpha 1 Ujoints

If you are just replacing uni joints DO NOT remove the retainer. Put all that lot back in the housing and tighten the retainer back up to 200lbft. As long as you haven't lost any of the shims, it should all go back the way it came out...

To remove the unis just flick the keepers out and drive the bearing caps through... Fitting the new ones it the reverse of removing the old ones....

If you took the yoke out of the double bearings, you will have to reset the rolling torque on reassembly, and I would strongly suggest you get a new front seal and the oring that seals the assembly in the housing.
Do you have a drive serial number? There are different specs and people use "Alpha I" as a generic term sometimes when it's not.

According to the manual....
Which Manual? There has been a rash of posts recently quoting what is bum dope from "bad" versions of the manuals. I only ask because I want to make sure I am getting good info from the posts.....

Alpha 1 gen 2 ol850536 I have not removed the retainer ring yet but it looks like someone has tried and messed up the ring. The slots are all buggered up even missing 2 notches. Looks like they tried to take it off without the wrench. Should I replace it or let it ride it looks tight and on oil is coming out from around the ring.

This makes me nervous. If I remove the ring and replace without taking the yoke out of the double bearings do I need to reset the rolling torque.

You have to take it apart, it's the only way to get the retainer off. If it makes you nervous, find a tech to do it for you.
