Alpha 1 yoke seal

I have oil leaking bad from the yoke seal and filling the bellows,the dealer said I should rebuild the upper half at around 1500.00. He said the seal probly wore a groove in the yoke shaft and that's why it's leaking. It does sound right rubber seal wears a steel shaft?

BLU yes that seal will put a groove into the yoke.It has a stainless steel spring inside that does the damage.<br />The yoke cost about $80.The seal kit about $40.<br />The labor depends<br />If you bring me the upper drive reseal a few hours If you bring the whole drive a couple more.Bring the boat more time.<br />DHP

What I have seen happen is a light build-up of rust on the shaft where the seal rides and this wears out the seal.<br /><br />If the seal is just worn from age, you can buy the retainer wrench and a new seal for less than $75 and replace it yourself.

A complete upper on iboats is $849

Well thanks for the responses. After reading the answers and confronting the dealer about a total rebuild. He going to replace the yoke shaft and seal for around 300.00 out the door. Does this sound a little more resonable?............Ted

Since the shaft itself sells for about $100, I would say thats a reasonable price, especially if that includes pulling and re-installing the outdrive.

It's resonable. I just did one last week, paid $42 for the yoke, $15 for the upper seal kit. It's a common prblem with Alpha drives.
