Alpha 2 Outdrive needs work

I am looking at buying a boat that is already greatly discounted. It is a 97 Proline 231 with an Alpha 2 outdrive. The only problem is the outdrive needs work. It runs but makes a loud noise that is believed to be the transmission. Worst case scenario, how much money would it be assuming the job needed to fix it was large? Thanks to anyone that replies!

Re: Alpha 2 Outdrive needs work

Thanks for the info, Trent. I have a little more info if you or anyone wants to take a stab at diagnosing it. The owner hit a rock at an estimated 10-15 mph with an alluminium prop. The safety came off but the rubber stayed on and the skeg was damaged. This happened last season. The lower gear case and prop were replaced by an amateur (he thought it would be an easy 6 bolts). The first time it was run this season, there was a noise coming from between the engine and the outdrive. Driveshaft? The prop spun fine in forward and reverse but there was still a noise. Any thoughts?

Ok Mod guys....I cant edit my posts tonight!!

If you spun your prop a prop shop can fix that as well as your lower unit (skeg). I THINK your guy replaced the lower unit and is a tooth off on the shift shaft when he installed it??

Ok, forget George W. or Sen. Kerry, Trent has my vote for President in 2004. Thanks man. And remember, even if your "safety" falls off, the "rubber" should always stay on! Be safe.
