I recently installed two new 5.7 longblocks in a 1998 28' Sea Ray. [Both blocks had been frozen by the previous owner:facepalm:] Anyway, I am setting up the shift cables, and noticed that I only have about 2-1/4" of travel in the cable itself from the shifter. This boat uses separate throttle and shift levers. According to manual #14, I should have between 2-7/8" and 3-1/8". If I adjust the lower shift cables just right, I can get forward and reverse out of both drives, however both shifters must travel all the way in both directions, [with the cables at the top of the slot to get the most travel possible] in order to get the drives to JUST engage in both forward and reverse. I can only assume it has been like this since the boat was made in 98, and it has worked ok up till now. There is a second postion in the shifter itself to allow for more travel of the cables. Should I try this second position, or should I just leave it as is? I am not able to water test the boat till spring due to the weather.

Thanks

Re: Alpha Gen 2 Shifting Issue

Made the change with the cables at the shifter, re-adjusted the lower cables, and everything is much better now! The drives now fully engage in both forward and reverse. I can only assume the boat had been like this, since it was new... I guess someone on the assembly line, just didn't know any better.

Thanks for your assistance Bond-o and happy holidays! :)
